Voice coil motor (VCM) has advantages of small volume, light weight, rapid response to velocity and acceleration, uniform mechanical characteristics, etc. It is widely used in various types of servo control systems. Because of the compact structure, heat dissipation from VCM becomes more difficult. In special circumstances, cooling technology has become an important factor of the cost and life restriction. It is investigated a VCM in this paper, which needs frequent action and operate in high ambient temperature. Using the flow-solid coupling method, the temperature field of components in the motor is simulated under natural and forced cooling. To verify the simulated results an experiment is carried out. It is indicated that the forced cooling is a necessary auxiliary for operation of such types of coil motor.
