The primary responsibilities of the Chair include, but are not limited to, providing academic oversight of programs, supporting a transparent shared governance environment, managing and allocating resources, establishing and implementing the Department's strategic plan, managing and developing faculty and staff, reviewing and managing the Department's budget, working with external advisory boards, and leading accreditation processes. Quality teaching and research are expected, though workload is negotiable.
The Department seeks a leader who can expand and promote innovative undergraduate and graduate programs. The ideal candidate should support and encourage a culture of diverse scholarship, teaching and service activities as well as foster a climate of collaboration and collegiality. The Chair should be able to effectively advocate for the needs of the Department's programs, students, and faculty. The Chair should have a strong understanding of mechanical engineering, as well as a clear awareness of industry and professional needs in the field.
An earned doctoral degree, or its foreign equivalent, in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required. A record of success commensurate with the rank of a tenured full professor in mechanical engineering is required upon appointment.

Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering

Applicants are invited for an Assistant Professor position in the area of offshore wind energy. A PhD in mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, naval architecture, or a closely related field is required.
Candidates must have a strong record of high-quality research or industry experience with evidence of or potential for teaching excellence. Desired areas of offshore wind energy expertise include, but are not limited to: naval architecture; design, modeling, and/or testing of floating structures in the ocean environment; mooring system design and modeling; controls co-design and artificial intelligence applied to ocean structures and/or wind turbines; structural reliability of offshore wind structures; and wind turbine blade design, manufacturing and testing.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead an externally-funded research program in association with the Alfond Wind-Wave Ocean Engineering Laboratory featuring a rotatable wind machine over a multidirectional wave basin, develop and teach courses in mechanical engineering, advise and mentor students, and participate in other related activities.
The Department offers an ABET accredited BS program as well as MS and PhD degrees with total student enrollment of over 500 students. The faculty also teach courses that support interdisciplinary minors in Marine Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, and Robotics, as well as a certificate in Composite Materials and Structures.
